Abstract: | The main goal of this thesis is to propose and implement an ontology-based
information system for storing, retrieving and managing data about failures
of historical and modern structures.
The presented system addresses real-world problems and user needs that
were formulated in cooperation with The Institute of Theoretical and Ap-
plied Mechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (a.k.a ITAM), and is
inspired by an existing prototypical relational database-backed system Db-
Failures developed by ITAM. The main benefits of the presented OWL
ontology-based system comparing to DbFailures are simple maintenance
of the knowledge structure and expressive modeling and querying means
including taxonomies, or transitivity of relations together with enterprise
technologies compliance, namely Java EE.
