Abstract:We have created mechanical model of cardiovascular system. Liquid in the system is pumped by the peristaltic (or roller) pump, heart function is simulated by expansion vessel with solenoid valve, vascular tree is simulated by branching structure of silicon tubing with decreasing diameter. Mechanical model is able to work in pulsatile or continous mode, while maintaining same cumulative flow. On the created model we have meassured flow on the lowest level of vascular tree and on the second lowest level. We have found out, that in the pulsatile mode the flow is significantly higher on the lowest level of vascular tree (0,122 +- 0,005 ml/s, in comparison with 0,0763 +- 0,004 ml/s in continous mode), while flow through second lowest level is higher in continous flow (2,770 +- 0,125 ml/s, in comparison with 2,491 +- 0,066 ml/s in pulsatile mode). We conclude, that the pulsatility of flow is significant for redistribution of liquid in vascular tree and should be taken in consideration in future design of mechanical heart supports.
