Matej Kristan presents HIDRA -- a deep neural network for accurate storm surge flood prediction

Climate change is exponentially intensifying extreme weather events. For
example, five of all 25 extreme storm surge coastal floods detected in the
North
Adriatic in the last 150 years occurred in just 2 weeks of 2019, each
devastating to coastal communities and economies. According to the
geoscientific
Earth models, the floods will continue to intensify into the foreseeable
future.
There is thus a pressing need to develop accurate flood prediction models that
can raise alarms days ahead and activate mitigation plans to protect the
coastal
communities. In this talk, I will present our contribution to this effort --
HIDRA -- a deep neural network designed by an interdisciplinary team of
geophysicists and computer scientists. HIDRA is the first machine-learning
method that outperforms the best geophysics sea surface height prediction
model,
it is half a million times faster and predicts the sea surface height for 3
days
ahead with a significantly better accuracy. HIDRA is already used in the
operational prognosis by the Slovenian Environment Agency.
