Description:Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is an MRI technique that uses
magnetically labeled blood as an endogenous tracer to image
cerebral perfusion. Compared to the other techniques for
measuring perfusion, it doea not need gadolinium-based
contrast-agents or radioactive tracers. Its complete
non-invasiveness makes it an ideal candidate for longitudinal
perfusion studies or for use in pediatric and healthy

The acquisition time of ASL is several minutes, making ASL
susceptible to head motion. There are several methods for motion
correction. However, these methods were mainly developed for
functional MRI and are not so well suited for ASL that has an
inherent difference between the control and labeled images. The
goal of this project is to develop a motion correction technique
adapted for advanced ASL sequences. This technique will
use a specialized cost-criterion - brain boundaries, edges, or other more
advanced features will be used for the registration. This
registration will be tested on a synthetic dataset generated
using an ASL-DRO and also on in-vivo datasets. The best approach
will be evaluated and implemented within the ExploreASL pipeline.

The technical supervision of the project will be guaranteed by
Dr. J. Petr (Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Germany). The
project will be done in collaboration with Dr. H. Mutsaerts and
B. Padrela (Amsterdam UMC, the Netherlands) who will grant the
student access to data, and Dr. A. Oliver-Taylor (GSP Phantom,
UK) who will supervise the data generation with the ASL-DRO. The
student will work with the ExploreASL software for the ASL data
analysis and write custom Matlab scripts for the data evaluation.
